Our ThermalHeart+® ranges explained

The ThermalHeart+® ranges share the same core design principles allowing for exceptional versatility across the full range of products. The three standard E2/AS1 installation ranges can be used within one project and maintain a consistent look.

Minimum insulation requirements for new housing set out in clause H1 Energy Efficiency of the New Zealand Building Code require all zones achieve a minimum R-Value (R0.46 for Zone 1-4, R0.50 for Zone 5-6). Wherever you are in New Zealand, your project will exceed the Building Code requirements when you choose ThermalHeart+® joinery with The AGP System® glazing.

Non-thermal ranges

For instances such as renovation, the replacement joinery needs to meet the minimum requirement in place at the time of the original installation (like-for-like). There are three non-thermally improved ranges available for use where it complies with the minimum requirement.

These are general guidelines only, consult with your local authority for specifics relevant to your project.

Residential Series

A non-thermally improved range of Residential Series is available. With clean, contemporary lines, it is our most economical, mainstream range of windows and doors.

  • Recommended door height of 2.2m - 2.4m, depending on site conditions
  • Options for insert windows
  • Scope to choose specialised passive ventilation features

Metro Series

A non-thermally improved range of Metro Series is available. It is a stylish and heavy-duty range, suitable for residential and architectural applications.

  • Recommended door height of 2.7m, depending on site conditions
  • Clean, flat surfaces
  • Sliding panel/s in this range will be the outer panel/s
  • Scope to choose specialised passive ventilation products

APL Architectural Series

A non-thermally improved range of APL Architectural Series is available. This range features square-edged shape and flush surfaces and is targeted at architectural homes and apartments.

  • Recommended door height of 2.7m, however doors can potentially be higher depending on site conditions
  • Square-edged shape and flush surfaces
  • Sliding panel/s in this range can be the inner or outer panel/s
  • Scope to choose specialised passive ventilation products

Note: performance specifications differ from the thermally-improved range above. In most cases, this option won't meet the new H1 Energy Efficiency requirements of the Building Code. Please consult with your local authority for specifics relevant to your project.

Aluminium joinery FAQ

What styles of windows and doors can be made in aluminium?
Close icon

All our aluminium windows and doors are custom made, so you can choose the styles and configurations that best suit your home.

Our window formats include: sliding windows, bi-fold windows, awning windows, casement windows and fixed windows.

Our door formats include: sliding doors, bi-fold doors, hinged doors, french doors. Doors that slide over the wall or into a cavity are also possible in APL Architectural Series ThermalHEART+.

Many formats can be combined and made in large sizes, depending on the range. View the window configurations and door configurations pages for an overview of the options. For help choosing the right options, see our format considerations or speak with one of our manufacturers.

What joinery options meet the regulations in my area?

The H1 requirements of the NZ Building Code are set into six climate zones to allow a more nuanced approach to climatic factors and window suitability. The zones are numbered from Zone 1 being the warmest climate, to Zone 6 in the coolest climate areas. All zones are now required to achieve a minimum R-Value (R0.46 for Zone 1-4, R0.50 for Zone 5-6). Wherever you are in New Zealand, your project will exceed the Building Code requirements when you choose ThermalHeart+®, or Klima® uPVC joinery with The AGP System®.

For a detailed breakdown of R values for our product combinations, see this simple table. With this table you can either work back from your target R or U value, or calculate your project values by following your selected range and glass specification.

You can find a map of the climate zones here.

For non-consented renovation work, the replacement joinery needs to meet the minimum requirement in place at the time of the original installation (like-for-like). However, updating joinery is an opportunity to increase the insulation properties of you windows and doors to current standards.

Note: These are general guidelines only - consult with your local authority for specifics relevant to your project.

Can I customise the joinery design, colour, or hardware to match my home?
Close icon

Yes. Altherm Window Systems are highly customisable, allowing you to tailor your windows and doors to suit your home’s style, layout, and performance needs. Aluminium joinery offers excellent strength and versatility, making it possible to achieve a wide range of configurations, sizes, and opening options while maintaining durability and clean, contemporary lines.

You can also choose from two aluminium surface finish options: powdercoating and anodising. Our powdercoat range includes a wide selection of popular colours, with dozens of additional options available if you’re looking for something more distinctive. These finishes perform in New Zealand conditions and complement a wide variety of exterior and interior colour schemes which can be utilised fully with the dual colour feature available in some of our ThermalHeart+ ranges.

Hardware is also customisable, with styles ranging from sleek and modern to more classic profiles. There are options which can be powdercoated to match or contrast you joinery, or anodised or stainless steel finishes available.

By combining your preferred configuration, colour, and hardware, you can create a window or door solution that complements your home. As every home is different, we work with you to help determine the Altherm window system best suited to your needs. Visit your local manufacturer to discuss options and see samples.

Are aluminium windows and doors suitable for New Zealand’s coastal and harsh environments?
Close icon

Yes. Altherm aluminium windows and doors are specifically designed and tested to perform reliably in New Zealand’s coastal and harsh weather conditions.

All Altherm joinery is designed, tested, and engineered in New Zealand by APL, then manufactured locally by one of our local manufacturers to meet the performance and durability requirements of the New Zealand Building Code.

Each system is tested to NZS 4211 for structural integrity, wind performance, and weathertightness at APL’s Hamilton-based test facility.

Our insulated glass units, made by AGP (APL’s integrated glass division), are manufactured and tested in New Zealand to NZS 4223, verified for durability, gas retention, and thermal efficiency.

Because Altherm joinery and glass systems are designed, tested, and made in New Zealand, homeowners can trust in full quality assurance, compliance, and accountability. All products meet or exceed New Zealand Building Code requirements.
